“Make money from home!”, shout the innumerable annoying ads you see on the side or bottom of just about every other webpage you visit. The ad always has flashing colors and tends to display a suspiciously attractive person ostentatiously waving a wad of cash in your face. There’s an adage that suggests anything that looks too good to be true, probably is. And that is almost certainly the case when it comes to these ads. But is that true for all home-based businesses? Is it actually possible to make money from home?

Ah, working from home. That’s the dream, isn’t it? Rolling out of bed whenever you want. Making yourself a big, tasty breakfast and then eventually shuttling over to your laptop while still in your PJs. Why you can even go out for a walk whenever you feel like it. Take an hour break to watch your favorite soap, right?

Wrong. Spoiler alert: Yes, it is possible to make money working from home. But the keyword is working. To successfully run a home-based business, you need a healthy amount of self-discipline. If you are reading this article right now in your office where you’re supposed to be working because you’re trying to find any way you can avoid having to wake up before 7 AM every day, this probably isn’t for you. Home-based businesses offer flexibility, yes. Maybe that does mean you get to sleep in a bit. Maybe it means you can drive and/or pick up your kids from school. But it doesn’t give you license to be lazy.

You can access the internet from anywhere so you can, in theory, do this type of work from home.

Digital marketing, for example, is a growing field and businesses increasingly need help navigating this unfamiliar territory. And this work that you can largely do from home, so a digital marketing franchise is an example of a home-based business. Another home-based business for sale that you can buy is a travel franchise. Travel agencies have changed a lot since the development of the internet. One area in which travel agencies still do big business is in arranging cruise vacations for people, often families or corporate retreats. Again, this is work that you can largely do from home. The same is true of certain financial franchises that can sometimes be run as home-based businesses.
